Brett Favre's Record Day Can't Silence 'Fire Childress' Chants

MINNEAPOLIS - The first time the crowd really got going was late in the first half. "Fire, Childress!'' The chant worked its way around the stadium, "Fire Childress,'' louder and louder because that's what everyone was here for, anyway.

Brad Childress, Minnesota's coach, had cut star receiver Randy Moss, brought in 26 days earlier as a savior, and then lied about how it went down. He never even told the team owner about it. Then the owner, Zygi Wilf, undermined his coach by asking players privately what they thought of him.

Frankly, enough was enough with Childress, and the whole team.

"I think they came expecting to see an execution,'' Childress said.

Or to perform it.

Instead, the minute the Vikings got rid of Moss, Brett Favre threw for more passing yards, 446, than he ever has. Minnesota beat Arizona 27-24 in overtime after Favre sparked an amazing comeback. The Vikings had trailed by 14 with 4 minutes left.

But just before halftime, with the crowd chanting, the PA guy quickly blasted music to drown out the anger. One problem: the song was "Start me Up'' by the Rolling Stones, and it would have been better not to blare out the words:

"You make a grown man cry.''
