Pete Carroll, Seahawks Don't Apologize for 7-9 Record After Stifling Rams

Pete Carroll, Charlie WhitehurstSEATTLE -- Seattle beat St. Louis 16-6 Sunday night, and the world didn't come to an end.

It may have seemed like it to football purists, but the 7-9 Seahawks are advancing to the NFL playoffs as the NFC West champs thanks to the victory over St. Louis, now also 7-9, in a winner-take-all West game.

And the New Orleans Saints, who won four more games than Seattle, including whipping the Seahawks once in the Big Easy, will have to travel to the Northwest for a game next Saturday.

In the next six days, the Seahawks will undoubtedly get tired of questions on the merits of a sub-.500 team earning a berth in the playoffs and getting a home game, no less. But for this one evening, anyway, all was comfort and joy in Qwest Field.

"The way I look at it,'' Seahawks right tackle Sean Locklear said, "Everybody's 0-0. No matter what happened in the regular season, everybody's back to 0-0.''

Locklear and the patchwork Seattle offensive line stepped up in the game's final nine minutes with the Seahawks holding a seven-point lead and plowed through a strong Rams' defense on play after play. Running back Marshawn Lynch used that as a springboard to his best play since joining the Seahawks, carrying the ball 10 times on the drive as Seattle drained 7:05 off the clock.
