Panthers Address Quarterback Options, Grab Brian St. Pierre From Practice Squad

The Carolina Panthers are not willing to go into Sunday's game against the Baltimore Ravens with just wide receiver Armanti Edwards as the backup quarterback, no matter how refreshing it might be for a beleaguered offense. If starter Jimmy Clausen cannot play, the Panthers would start rookie Tony Pike and have as the backup, Brian St. Pierre, who they promoted from the practice squad Tuesday.

Clausen, whose playing status for the game is questionable, tried to sneak in for a touchdown on the game's final play Sunday against Tampa Bay and was hit in the helmet. The Panthers suspect that's when he was injured.

Pike has to be ready. He was harassed in the the Sugar Bowl game against Florida last January by the Gators' fast defenders, and now he is really going to find out what it means to be hounded. Pike, who was the University of Cincinnati's starting quarterback, was sacked four times in the first half alone by the Gators.

Now, he might have to deal with Baltimore's disguises and varied blitzes. Veteran quarterbacks have trouble with all the walking around on defense the Ravens to mask the fourth and fifth rusher out of the 3-4 defense.
