Is Brady Quinn pushing Tim Tebow to third on the depth chart?

There are a lot of people who believe that Tim Tebow should be the starting quarterback for the Denver Broncos. Maybe these people need to get together, organize, and focus their efforts on making sure Tebow is at least the number two quarterback.

According to Mike Klis of the Denver Post, Brady Quinn is making a pretty strong claim on the backup job, too.

Quinn is closing in on his desire to lead a team full time, if not yet at the threshold. Since his splendid preseason performance at Dallas, Quinn has been alternating second-team reps in practice with Tebow. [...]

With the NFL no longer forcing teams to make a No. 3 quarterback designation on game day, there's a chance Tebow would be used for the occasional "Tebow package" plays, but Quinn would get the longer-term backup role.

"I don't know why it is, or exactly how to explain it, but Brady is much better this year than he was last year," Broncos star cornerback Champ Bailey said. "He just seems much more confident."

With the Notre Dame pedigree, the manicured hair and the dripping-with-schadenfruede draft slide, it's been easy (and for some, pleasurable) to dismiss Quinn. But there's got to be something there. He has had two or three games as a professional where he's looked like a viable NFL quarterback.

He hasn't done it consistently, obviously (he didn't play a down in 2010), but at age 26, there's still time for him. Plenty of quarterbacks have blossomed at ages past 26. Physically, Quinn's got the tools. He was once thought of as a potential first-overall pick, and David Lee, a quarterback coach who worked with Quinn in the offseason, says he's got a stronger arm than either Manning brother.

It's something to keep an eye on. If Kyle Orton goes down for some reason, a heavily hyped college star will step in, but it might not be the one you think.
