Leaders Southampton come unstuck at Bristol City, Sheffield Wednesday move second in League One and Plymouth win
? Derek McInnes's impressive start at Bristol City continued as the Robins beat the Championship leaders Southampton 2-0 at Ashton Gate. Albert Adomah put the Robins on course for only their second home win of the season on 48 minutes, before Nicky Maynard sealed victory with a second late on. The win means relegation-threatened City have now gone five games unbeaten while gung-ho Saints have conceded 14 goals on the road ? a figure which puts them down there with strugglers Watford, Millwall and Portsmouth. Robins fans will not have forgiven him yet, but Adomah is proving yet another shrewd Steve Coppell signing.
? Since Barnsley beat Leeds United 5-2 at Oakwell last season the Tykes have held a footballing hex over their West Yorkshire rivals. Leeds went in to the match on the back of impressive wins against Leicester City and Burnley, but the former Bolton star Ricardo Vaz Te smashed Barnsley ahead in the 27th minute and Keith Hill's side managed to hang on for a 2-1 win. Leeds United now have not won at Elland Road since squeaking past Portsmouth 1-0 on 1 October. There was no sign of Leeds' estranged defender Andy O'Brien.
? Blackpool's barnstorming bandwagon is back. The Seasiders played out an entertaining 2-2 draw with the equally inconsistent Birmingham City. Marlon King put Birmingham ahead, but Stephen Crainey and Neal Eardley looked to have secured all three points for Blackpool until Nikola Zigic notched an equaliser in the dying minutes. Up next for Blackpool ? Leicester, Reading and Southampton. "Blimey, they are difficult," said the Tangerines manager Ian Holloway. "It's a case of please look away now if you are of a nervous disposition. Anyone can beat us. We have already lost five times." Notable mentions also for exciting finales at Burnley (2-3 at Hull) and Reading (2-3) at Ipswich.
All League One eyes were on Hillsborough, as Sheffield Wednesday sought to close the gap on pacesetters Charlton and Huddersfield, who play on Monday. Going into their match against Leyton Orient, the Owls had taken 22 points out of 24, while the O's were unbeaten in 10. But the Owls had it, as Reda Johnson headed them into a first-half lead which Gary Megson's men managed to close out and move up to second spot.
? Home Park saw a goal-fest as Plymouth Argyle beat Northampton Town 4-0 in the League Two equivalent of American Samoa v Tonga. Dumped out of the FA Cup by Stourbridge of the Evo-Stik Southern Premier League midweek, Carl Fletcher's team pulled themselves back to within three points of safety by beating struggling Northampton. The new old signing Nick Chadwick was among the goals and in the thick of the action. After losing 7-2 to Shrewsbury Town last week, the result was another steel toecap in the shins for Cobblers fans. The caretaker manager Tim Flowers has plenty to do.
