Matt Moore, Quarterback, Miami Dolphins. I know there's another quarterback out there leading his team to some unlikely wins, but let's unite as football fans to show some love for Matt Moore, too. He's like Tim Tebow, except he plays the quarterback position well. He's led the Dolphins to three straight wins, with a quarterback rating of 118.6 over those three games. On Sunday, the Bills were the recipient of the wrath of Matt Moore. It wasn't super flashy, but it was efficient: 14 of 20 for 160 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.
Kevin Smith, Running Back, Detroit Lions. Smith would've made this list based on his rushing alone -- his 140 yards were the best in the NFL on Sunday -- but the awesome thing about Kevin Smith ishow he even arrived at the opportunity. The Lions signed him just eight days before Sunday's game, only because Smith kept himself available and in great shape. From Philip Zaroo at MLive.com:
He said his routine in preparing for a return to the NFL was simple:
"Wake up at 7 o'clock in the morning, train 'til 12, go home and play with my son, go to sleep," he said before repeating, "wake up at 7 o'clock in the morning, train 'til 12, go home and play with my son."
All of that, while he wasn't even on a roster. And when the opportunity did come, he stepped up and he crushed it. The Lions are very fortunate that Kevin Smith has the work ethic and belief in himself that he does.
Torrey Smith, Wide Receiver, Baltimore Ravens. There have been some super-talented receivers drafted over the past couple of years, like Dez Bryant, A.J. Green and Julio Jones. Is there any reason to believe that Torrey Smith of the Ravens can't have a career that matches any of those guys? The man with Maryland pride and seismophobia consistently gets behind defenses and makes plays. He caught six balls for 165 yards and a touchdown Sunday, and would have had more if Pacman Jones hadn't yanked him down by the dreads.
Jay Cutler, Quarterback, Chicago Bears. Some other quarterbacks had bigger numbers than Jay Cutler, but the more I see of the guy this season, the more I'm impressed. At fighting off blitzers and keeping plays alive, Cutler might be behind only Michael Vick and Ben Roethlisberger right now. The Chargers pressed him. They were able to get pressure with their front seven, and Cutler made it not matter. He stood tall, took some shots and got the ball out. Apparently, he did a lot of this with a broken thumb, too.
Vincent Jackson, Wide Receiver, San Diego Chargers. The Chargers fell to the Bears, but Vincent Jackson did his part. In fact, you could argue that he kept the Chargers in the game. More than half of Philip Rivers' passing yards went to Jackson -- seven receptions for 165 yards and a touchdown. If he had one-on-one on the outside, Chicago just didn't have anyone that could handle him. Of course, the San Diego defense didn't have anyone that could handle anyone on the Chicago offense, either, but that's another story.
