Peterson?s cardinal sin results in 99-yard game-winning TD

Never catch a punt on the 1-yard line. Never. All right, maybe just this once.

Arizona Cardinals rookie Patrick Peterson committed a special teams sin on Sunday when he fielded a punt on the 1-yard line early in overtime. It's a forgivable mistake when you have the evasiveness and speed of Peterson, who ran around two defenders, cut upfield, lept over a tackler at the 15, pinballed his way off the punter at the 35 and then won a footrace to the end zone to give Arizona an improbable 19-13 victory over the St. Louis Rams.

"I don't know what made me catch the ball on the 1-yard line," Petersontold Yahoo! Sports Radio's Peter Brown after the game. "I saw the two players doing a great job on their gunners and saw the interior guys on the 20, so that's the main reason why I took a chance and the rest speaks for itself. Those guys were blocking their tails off the whole way trying to get me to the end zone and I couldn't have done this without those 10 guys in front of me."

The return touchdown was the rookie's third on the season, which tied a Cardinals record. That record isn't for single-season punt return touchdowns, but for career punt return touchdowns.
