Talking Horses: The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog, plus your chance to win in our weekly tipping competition

The latest news and best bets in our daily horse racing blog, plus your chance to win in our weekly tipping competition

Today's best bets, by Chris Cook

It is not given to every horse to start at odds of 2-13 for his chasing debut but that's what's available about Peddlers Cross on Betfair for the 1.40pm at Bangor. You can get double-figure odds about all three of his opponents, the best of which is Laterly, well beaten off a mark of 125 in handicap hurdles on his last two starts.

Peddlers Cross has yet to run in a handicap but his official rating was 170 after he ran second to Hurricane Fly in the Champion Hurdle. That means he might have three stones in hand today.

This was the job he was always meant to do and he won a point-to-point in Ireland 2 years ago. I hope and believe he'll zip round with few problems this afternoon, raising the prospect of some thrilling performances against stronger opposition this winter.

You can get 7-4 about Current Event (2.50) in his beginners chase at Exeter and, though he may be no Peddlers Cross, I feel those odds may be worth taking. Ex-French, he hacked up in a novice hurdle at Newbury last season after a breathing operation and was a fair third in the Persian War at Chepstow recently.

At his open day two months ago, Paul Nicholls told the audience: "I'm itching to run him over fences round the smaller tracks and he could be interesting." His main rival is Ski Sunday, second in the Fred Winter in 2009 and an easy winner at Kempton last season.

That was his first jumps race since losing his left eye in an accident and he was deliberately steered wide to get a good look at the obstacles. Similar tactics would be understandable on his chasing debut but could also make things difficult for him if Current Event is useful. The other fancied runner, Easter Meteor, looks more of a type for handicaps.

Nicholls fields Curtain Razer in the opening novice hurdle and this half-brother to Hear The Echo (the 2008 Irish National winner) will be one to follow. Today's 2-mile trip round this testing course gives him a chance but he'll surely need time and distance to show his best and this time I prefer Oscar Davy (12.50), who was going to win at Carlisle last month before coming down at the last, something that happened to Philip Hobbs horses more than once in October. He's 2-1 to gain compensation.

At 15-2, Camden (1.50) is being underestimated for the Pertemps staying handicap hurdle. This is by no means likely to be the big day for some of his rivals, while this five-year-old comes from the in-form Oliver Sherwood yard, should be sharp and ready and looks well treated on the basis of his much-improved form when scoring at Fontwell in April.

Paddy Power's Tipping competition, day three

Johnny909 swept to the front, thanks to Manshoow (9-1) and Kayf Commander (5-1), a double also achieved by Lameduck and slackdad38, who share a handy fourth. Wiggy12 and suckzinclee had Manshoor and Right Stuff (13-8).

Today, we'd like your tips, please, for these races: 3.20 Exeter, 3.40 Bangor, 7.20 Kempton.

This week's prize is a 50 bet at SP on Saturday's Paddy Power Gold Cup, kindly offered by the sponsors.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of 1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -6.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
