Bucs DT Brian Price was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct in Tampa Bay's loss to the Carolina Panthers. Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris was so disgusted with the penalty that he didn't just pull Price from the game. He sent him home.
"Yes, I sent him to the locker room,'' Morris said. "I told him go home. [Expletive]. Yeah. Because it's foolish, it's selfish to your teammates, to everybody in your organization, to your fans. That's terrible. That's just selfish behavior to get a 15-yard penalty, in that situation, when that's all we talk about, when that's all we discuss. You just can't do that to your team ... When you give up a penalty, after a third-and-15, those are things that are not smart, not fair to anybody on the football team. Not fair to anybody that's coaching that football team. Those things are unacceptable.''
Instead of the Panthers losing yardage on a Geno Hayes sack of Cam Newton, they gained 15 yards on Price's penalty. That kept alive a drive that not only ate up clock, but ended in a touchdown that sealed the game for Carolina.
The Buccaneers started the season 3-1, but are on a six-game losing streak and on the bottom of the NFC South. Morris has just one year left on his contract, and rumors are flying that he is on the hot seat.
It doesn't help that even Morris doesn't think that his players are listening to him.
"You know, they're not listening,'' Morris said. "They've got to listen and we've got to do a better job of coaching. That's all."
Morris wanted to send a message to his players. Price bore the brunt of it, but at least he got to avoid game day traffic.
