There were boos at this year's Pro Bowl, which is not something you want at the festive, care-free celebration of the best your league has to offer.
Roger Goodell heard them, and now, thankfully, he's considering doing the only thing that makes sense ? putting a blindfold on the Pro Bowl, marching it to the end of a dimly-lit pier, and putting two bullets in the back of its head. Via ESPN:
"We're either going to have to improve the quality of what we're doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes or even considering eliminating the game if that's the kind of quality game we're going to provide," Goodell said.
Atta way, commish. When you've made Hawaiians boo, you've probably messed up. It's the Aloha State. There's beautiful weather, gorgeous beaches, plentiful sunshine and everyone gets a free lei at the airport. If you make people in Hawaii angry, you've really gone out of your way.
At this point, killing the Pro Bowl is the right thing to do. There's nothing wrong with just accepting that some sports aren't conducive to entertaining, meaningful all-star games. The NFL is one of them.
Players might complain if the Pro Bowl gets the axe, but they'll be the same complaints we heard when they moved the Pro Bowl out of Hawaii. Guys just want their all-expenses paid trip to Hawaii. Myself, I'm not going to lose sleep over where Brandon Marshall gets to vacation and who pays for it. I may have some sympathy for the Hawaii department of tourism, but for the players themselves? I can muster none.
I'm not looking for anything to replace it, either. I don't want any kind of a skills competition or anything like that. If I had to offer a prediction, though, it would be that the NFL's awards program ? NFL Honors ? might get shoved into the Sunday before Super Sunday slot.
