Former NFL linebacker and current ESPN analyst Hugh Douglas has always been something of a face-punching enthusiast. The most recent addition to the list of faces he wants to be punched? Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio's.
From ESPN Radio, where Douglas was talking to Scott Van Pelt about David Garrard's sudden release from the Jags:
This is not unlike Jack, because he did Byron Leftwich the same way. So my statement is this: If there was ever a head coach that needs to be punched in the face for not being truthful to his players, it has to be Jack Del Rio.
In fairness to Douglas, it should be mentioned that Scott Van Pelt brought up the subject of punching people in the face. He asked Douglas which head coach in the league he'd most like to punch in the face.
Douglas played one year for Del Rio, 1993, Del Rio's rookie season as a head coach. That year didn't go so well, either, so maybe Hugh Douglas isn't in a great position to sit and judge Jack Del Rio. Jaguars blog Big Cat Country was happy to make that point:
Hey Hugh, are you going to return any of that free agent money you flat out stole from Wayne Weaver? Remember on Hard Knocks when you came in fat and the team made you lose weight? Remember when you played, and you were horrible, lazy, didn't try, and [got] axed after a single season? Remember when Terrell Owens actually did jack you in your face in the locker room?
Remember on First Take a few weeks ago when you said "I didn't play for the Jaguars, I had a paid vacation," with a stupid grin on your face?
So yeah, there are probably quite a few Jaguars fans out there today who wouldn't mind Hugh Douglas getting punched in the face.
Myself, I'm just enjoying all this "punch him in the face" talk. I would be all for NBC and the NFL canceling their little pregame concert Thursday night, and in its place, gathering up Jack Del Rio, Hugh Douglas, and a whole bunch of Jaguars fans, and letting everybody punch everybody in the face.
