Woodson opens NFL season with celebratory crotch punch

Midway through the third quarter of the Packers-Saints season opener, I turned to a friend and mentioned that Charles Woodson had been so quiet in the game that I had forgotten he was playing. The perennial All-Pro and 2009 Defensive Player of the Year hadn't made much of an impact to that point, mainly because Sean Payton and Drew Brees were content to pick on lesser corners rather than try and throw at one of the best in the game.

A few seconds later, Woodson made his impact. The Packers cornerback got into a scuffle with Saints tight end David Thomas and ended up punching him in the most sensitive of areas.

There's never any condoning a shot to the goods but, in Woodson's defense, Thomas was giving him the business after the play and it's possible that Woodson was just giving it back. Though there was definite fist-to-groin contact, a reasonable argument could be made that it was an accident. This wasn't necessarilyShaun Smith orHerb Pope or Chris Paul. Also, it was pretty good form by Chuck. He looked like Mike Tyson from "Punch Out."

Woodson was assessed a 15-yard penalty and should be expecting correspondence from NFL Headquarters sometime soon.
