Forget quarterback matchups, the quality of secondaries or historical precedent. As WFAN radio anchor Mike Francesa demonstrated this week, the easiest way to accurately predict the outcome of the Super Bowl is to lie about it.
According to The New York Post, the bombastic host was bragging on the air this week about successfully picking the New York Giants to beat the spread against the undefeated New England Patriots in 2008. Francesa told listeners that he predicted a 20-17 Patriots victory in the game. Given that New England was a 13.5-point favorite, that would have been enough for the wagering win.
Francesa didn't pick that score, though. Phil Mushnick, the Post columnist who has been a longtime critic of the radio host, noted that Francesa actually predicted a 35-17 Pats win. Francesa's pants promptly caught on fire.
In his mind, Francesa has also accurately guessed that the Giants would make the Super Bowl after losing to the Washington Redskins in Week 15, the success of Victor Cruz and the bottoming out of the U.S. housing market. He'll let you know next year who he's picking in Sunday's game.
