Cardinals vs. 49ers: San Francisco Drops Arizona to Low Point in NFC West

The Arizona Cardinals, the two-time defending NFC West champions, wound up in the cellar after San Francisco closed out the season with a 38-7 win at Candlestick Park behind QB Alex Smith.

It was the first, and probably for the near term, only win for Jim Tomsula, promoted from defensive line coach to the head job last week after the firing of Mike Singletary. Tomsula, an interim pick, probably will return to the 49ers next season in the same capacity in which he spent the first 15 games. The 49ers are looking for a new general manager and a new coach heading into the draft.

The Cardinals and the 49ers came into the game tied at 5-10 in the NFL's worst division. This one was close for a half, but two third-quarter TD runs by RB Brian Westbrook and a TD strike of 59 yards to TE Vernon Davis from Smith.

Things weren't all bleak for the Cardinals, who have a shot at a top-5 draft pick after taking the loss. The 49ers will pick somewhere between seventh and ninth.
