Mike Smith FalconsWhat do you get when you lead your team to over 30 victories, three straight winning seasons, and two playoff appearances in the first three years of coaching your coaching tenure?

According to a report in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Falcons coach Mike Smith is about to find out and he should be pretty happy. A source tells the paper that the team's "first order of business" this offseason will be inking Smith to a contract extension. Smith is in his third year of a four-year contract that was valued between $8 and $10 million. There has been no in-season contract discussions, as first reported by ESPN and confirmed by this report.

Since taking over for Emmitt Thomas (1-2), who took over for three games at the end of the 2007 season after Bobby Petrino (3-10) resigned, the Smith-led Falcons have won 32 games. Of his three seasons, this one has been his most successful, as a win Sunday against Carolina would secure the No.1 seed in the NFC heading into the playoffs and wrap up the NFC South title.

The 51-year-old Daytona Beach, Fla. native began his NFL coaching career with the Baltimore Ravens in 1999 as a defensive assistant. After three years there, he became the defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars for five years before landing his first NFL head coaching job with the Falcons in 2008.
