The NFL playoffs opened with one of the sport's biggest-ever postseason upsets, as the 10 1/2-point underdog Seahawks stunned the defending-champion Saints, 41-36, in front of a boisterous Qwest Field crowd in Seattle. The Saints jumped out to a 10-0 lead, thanks in part to a Matt Hasselbeck interception. But after that early forced turnover, New Orleans' defense imploded, while Hasselbeck and the Seahawks' offense did whatever it wanted. Seattle rallied to grab a surprising 24-20 halftime lead, extended that advantage to 34-20 in the third quarter, then held on for the victory.
New Orleans' loss means that a new champion will be crowned in Dallas a month from now. Seattle, which won the NFC West with a 7-9 record, will play at either Atlanta or Chicago next weekend for a shot to go to the NFC title game.
Some thoughts on this game:
o. Hasselbeck struggled down the stretch as Seattle tried to hold its lead, but the 35-year-old QB was absolutely brilliant after throwing an early interception. After New Orleans opened a 10-0 lead, Hasselbeck proceeded to fire four touchdown passes, scorching a New Orleans secondary that had given up just 13 TD passes all year.
