Dirty Dozen: Coaching Carousel Spins

Three in-season coaching changes in 12 weeks isn't unprecedented, although it's unusual. More unusual is that the changes are in Dallas, Minnesota and Denver, three franchises that have usually been successful enough to avoid panic. The Cowboys went their first 29 seasons with one coach and the change from Wade Phillips to Jason Garrett was the first in-season switch in the 22 seasons Jerry Jones has owned the team.

The changes have worked so far. The Cowboys and Vikings are a combined 5-1 under Garrett and Leslie Frazier, and while neither will make the playoffs, both could hold their jobs next season.

Some capsule observations on coaching changes, starting with one from last year. And remember that it's hard to project anything because the uncertain labor situation might keep teams from making changes that could require them to pay new coaches not to coach.

Five-sixths of a dozen this week capped by a 21-year-old anecdote that might reflect on the present and another that reflects on the Jets and their mouthing off.
