Panthers Must Upgrade at Tight End to Move Forward on Offense

The Saints, and then the Falcons, did not waffle when it came to addressing their need at tight end. They were aggressive and made moves.

In 2008, New Orleans traded a second and fifth round pick to the Giants for Jeremy Shockey. In 2009, the Falcons acquired Tony Gonzalez for a second round pick.

Now it is the Panthers' turn to act decisively and get a tight end. They have Jeff King, a team guy and blocker, but not the two-way player they have to have They have Dante Rosario, but he is still a work in progress.

Ron Rivera, the new coach, is accustomed to having a terrific tight end. He watched one with Antonio Gates in San Diego.

But do the Panthers wait until they get their franchise quarterback, or do they start adding toys for him now?

The best out there in terms of free agents is Marcedes Lewis of the Jaguars. The other free agent tight end to watch is Zach Miller of the Raiders.

Bo Scaife of the Titans is available, but he is too much of a veteran and the Panthers are going with younger guys, mostly.

Owen Daniels of the Texans is another possibility, but he is coming off knee surgery. It will take some faith and some serious study to grab Daniels.
