When Thomas Dimitroff arrived in Atlanta he had that halo around his head that goes with being part of the success with the New England Patriots. When you contribute to a superb organization people notice.Dimitroff has been gone from the Patriots for three years, but he still has that halo. He is making his own way in Atlanta without the aid of the braintrust in Foxboro.
Dimitroff was named NFL Executive of the Year by the Sporting News on Wednesday because of his role in the Falcons' 13-3 season. It was the third straight winning season for the Falcons.
Dimitroff deserves some recognition -- he has won the award two of the last three years -- but I thought another good choice would have been the Buccaneers' Mark Dominick.
He had a spectacular year. Look at the highlights. Dominick claimed LeGarrette Blount off waivers. The rookie ends up as a 1,000-yard rusher. That was quite a find. Who claims a feature back off waivers?
The Bucs were warned away from the Syracuse wide receiver Mike Williams. Trouble, they were told. Tampa Bay picked Williams in the fourth round.
Williams became the best rookie receiver in the NFL. He had some trouble with a late-night arrest, but there were no charges.
