FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Not wanting to risk a repeat of what happened in last year's season finale against the Houston Texans, the New England Patriots have designated wide receiver Wes Welker inactive for Sunday's game against the Miami Dolphins at Gillette Stadium.

Welker of course tore his ACL and MCL in his left knee on the fourth play of the game at Houston and not only missed the playoffs but was expected to miss all or most of this season. Somehow he rehabbed the injury faster than expected and made it back for the start of the season, going on to lead the team in receptions through 15 games with 86 for 848 yards and seven touchdowns. With the No. 1 overall seed and home-field advantaged already clinched, the Patriots are playing it safe.
