Ryan Mathews Provides Glimpse of Future

DENVER -- Chargers rookie running back Ryan Mathews' best day as a pro was a long time in coming.

Mathews broke through for his first 100-yard rushing game and scored three touchdowns in San Diego's 33-28 win against the Denver Broncos in a regular season finale on Sunday.

A first-round pick out of Fresno State burdened by the expectation of filling the shoes of former Chargers great LaDainian Tomlinson, Mathews was hampered much of the season by a high ankle sprain that he initially suffered in Week 2.

On Sunday, Mathews showed he could be the workhorse running back he was envisioned as by the Chargers. He carried a career-high 26 times for 120 yards and had touchdown runs of 31, 27 and 12 yards.

Mathews, perhaps mindful of the struggles with his health and game-day productivity, didn't see his performance as a total success.
