Thank you, Jim Harbaugh.
You may have just saved the NFL from being replaced by soccer as the most popular sport on the West Coast.
Harbaugh ended weeks of speculation Friday by becoming San Francisco's coach. Seattle coach Pete Carroll immediately sent a dozen dead roses to 49ers headquarters.
The first question that always comes to mind here is, "Will this college genius be a dunderhead in the NFL?" The only honest answer is, "Who knows?" though in this case we're tempted to say, "Who cares?"
Harbaugh could be Steve Spurrier II and it would still be a great hire. That's because people will now watch an NFC West game to see if Carroll has a joy buzzer in his palm during the post-game handshake.
Previously the only reason anyone turned on an NFC West game was to extract information from terrorists. About three minutes of John Skelton vs. Alex Smith was enough to make anyone talk.
In case you permanently averted your eyes in November, the Seahawks won the division with a 7-9 record. The remaining NFC West teams -- St. Louis, San Francisco, Arizona and Prairie View A&M -- combined for approximately three wins and seven touchdowns this past season.
