Sometimes he did. Sometimes Troy Smith started.
But looking forward, Alex Smith won't have that particular issue to deal with. The club's first-round draft pick in 2005 out of Utah is a free agent and seems unlikely in the extreme to return to the 49ers.
In recent years he was a favorite target of Candlestick Park boo-birds.
"I've gone through enough of that,'' Smith told the San Jose Mercury News. "It's laughable a little bit. That stuff's not fazing me at this point. I've been through enough that I can deal with that.''
In what was probably his final game as a 49er, Smith hit on 15-of-29 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns, one of the better games of his career, which has stretched over six seasons.
Now free agency beckons, and Smith is interested in seeing how the process unfolds.
"I think the attractive thing is finally getting a say in where you want to go, where you're going to be,'' Smith said. "I haven't had that chance up until now, so obviously there is a positive in it.''
Smith has thrown for 9,399 yards in six seasons, collecting 51 touchdown passes as opposed to 53 interceptions.
Asked to describe his six seasons with San Francisco, where he is ranked sixth in career passing yards and career TD passes thrown, Smith laughed as he cleaned out his locker Monday.
