One of the most poignant tweets during Super Bowl XLV came moments after the Packers stopped the Steelers' final drive, clinching their fourth Super Bowl title. Two years ago, Pittsburgh had driven for a game-winning touchdown in a similar situation, snatching the title from the Arizona Cardinals in one of the most memorable finishes in Super Bowl history."If only this could have happened two years ago," Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald tweeted.
The second half also drew a question from Maurice Jones-Drew about Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
"Why isn't rodgers smiling... He plays better when he's having fun..." Jones-Drew said.
Jones-Drew's tweet came during a second half in which the Pittsburgh Steelers cut into what had been a 21-3 Packers lead. And while it wasn't as notable as when Jones-Drew somewhat famously criticized Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler in the NFC Championship Game, it was an example of what was happening on Twitter during Sunday's final game of the NFL season.
Twitter was abuzz throughout the Packers' 31-25 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers in North Texas on Sunday, and while there was none of the controversy created when fellow players criticized Cutler's toughness two weeks back, it was evident players were watching.
And, yes, tweeting.
"Wow, the pack are balling out," Cleveland Browns returner Josh Cribbs tweeted in the second half.
"can tell u one thing......that infamous #WALK that the steelers are taking to the locker room is #THEWORST ever as an Athlete!" Indianapolis Colts defensive end Robert Mathis tweeted afterward.
There was also a bit of buzz about those attending the game.
In the third quarter, FOX's cameras spanned Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' luxury suite, scanning past John Madden and former President George Bush. When Fox announcer Joe Buck mentioned Charlotte Jones Anderson, Houston Texans offensive tackle Eric Winston responded with a quick, insightful tweet:
"How many people just goggled (sic) Charlotte Jones Anderson??"
If you weren't among them, she's the executive vice president of brand management of the Cowboys -- and Jones' daughter.
Later, as Rodgers led the Packers on a game-clinching drive, Winston tweeted, "Rodgers absolutely has ice water running thru his veins! The guy is sick."
Meanwhile, Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Marcedes Lewis didn't much like Fox bringing up Ben Roethlisberger's off-field issues, tweeting, "Why would they bring up that case on big ben On one of the biggest stages in sports.. nothin to do with today..smh."
Jalen Rose, former NBA star now an ESPN NBA analyst, switched sports for a while Sunday, and after the Packers took a 28-17 fourth-quarter lead, he tweeted:
"Packers have 21 pts off Steelers turnovers!"
Other Super Bowl-related tweets of note:
o. Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane: "This Super Bowl halftime event looks like the talent show from Revenge of the Nerds."
o. Conan O'Brien: This Super Bowl could end in sudden death; especially for that fat guy in the Packers hat eating bratwurst.
o. Joan Rivers: "I can't wait for the Super Bowl. I've got $500 riding on Serena Williams scoring a slam-dunk in the bottom of the fifth."
o. Jeremy Piven: "Excessive celebration @ the Super Bowl? That's like handing out speeding tickets @ the Indy 500."
o. HomerJSimpson: "Congratulations Packers, you did it. Now the bad news, you still live in Green Bay."
Finally, minutes after the game, Indianapolis Colts cornerback Jerraud Powers spoke for not only players and owners, but certainly for the fans, wrapping up his Super Bowl tweeting with a plea for football sanity.
