Wade Phillips joined the Houston Texans as defensive coordinator Wednesday, making official what had been rumored for a week.Phillips, a native of Orange, Texas and head coach of the Dallas Cowboys until his midseason firing, replaced Frank Bush, who along with three defensive assistants was fired Wednesday by coach Gary Kubiak. HoustonTexans.com reported the hiring.
Phillips spent much of Wednesday interviewing with Kubiak, and had been rumored to be the Texans' next defensive coordinator since midway through last week, when media outlets began reporting that Kubiak would be retained despite a fifth season as head coach without a post-season appearance.
Texans Owner Bob McNair had expressed a desire to have an experienced coordinator with past success in the NFL after the defense had struggled under Richard Smith and Frank Bush, neither of whom had entered the job with NFL coordinator experience.
