Alex SmithSAN DIEGO -- In front of Alex Smith was an orange pylon, the goal-line chalk and an angle on a Chargers defender.

The moment screamed opportunity for the beleaguered 49ers quarterback Thursday night.

Here, on the same San Diego field where he and high school teammate Reggie Bush had excelled years ago, was a gift-wrapped chance for the former No. 1 draft pick to both assert and redeem himself.

Get the football there, Alex, and your coach Mike Singletary would have less reason to publicly doubt you.

Get the football there, Alex, and your desperate team would be tied on the road in a nationally televised game.

Whatever you do, Alex, advance the football to either the foam or the chalk, because that Chargers defender is going to hit you in the right side, regardless, as you near the end zone's left front corner.
