SEATTLE -- It was another day of doing what needed to be done for the Atlanta Falcons, who took another step closer to the NFC South title with a 34-18 win over Seattle. For the Seahawks, however, it was another step closer to elimination from the NFC West race, even though they remain in a first-place tie with St. Louis with identical 6-8 records.
The Rams own the tiebreaker if the two teams finish with the same record, and if San Francisco (5-9) forces a three-way tie, the 49ers hold the tiebreaker.
Seattle went so far as to replace longtime starting quarterback Matt Hasselbeck with Charlie Whitehurst late in the third quarter.
Atlanta quarterback Matt Ryan threw for three scores and moved the ball at will with the considerable assistance of running back Michael Turner, who did much of the run-down-the-clock running in the third and fourth quarters as the Falcons brought a streak of four road games in five weeks to an end.
The Falcons are winners of eight consecutive games and, at 12-2, one game up on defending Super Bowl champion New Orleans. Atlanta will focus the next two weeks on seeing if it can seal home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
