Tennessee Titans coach Jeff Fisher and quarterback Vince Young don't like each other. At all.Their relationship is the most poisonous of any quarterback and head coach relationship in the NFL. In fact, there isn't even a challenger. Fisher and Young have always been standoffish of one another, but this year's kerfuffle has been straight from "Bring It On."
Yep, the Titans' two greatest luminaries have gone all teenage girl on us, catfighters who tear each other down with withering glances of disapprobation all while the locker room falls in tatters around them. Everyone has chosen sides, are you team VY or team Fisher, team Jennifer or team Angelina. Who wears the feud best?
The two have to communicate via withering glances and palace intrigue loyalty tests -- witness Fisher's benching of VY advocate Bo Scafe Sunday -- since neither man has spoken to the other since November.
What were the final words spoken before their 40 days and 40 nights of silence?
Scene: Titans locker room in the wake of the team's November 21 defeat to the Washington Redskins. Cue the bad B-movie dialogue that would get any writer fired, and action:
Jeff Fisher: "Don't run out on your teammates!"
Vince Young: "I'm not running out on my teammates, I'm running out on you!"
That actually happened.
In an NFL locker room.
Since that time neither man has spoken to the other. That silence has been aided and abetted by Young's suffering a thumb injury that ended his season in that same Redskins game. As a result, it's an icy, stonewalled silence, a winter of Titan discontent, the Cold War on the banks of the Cumberland.
And perestroika ain't coming around that bend.
