D.J. WilliamsENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Broncos linebacker D.J. Williams was stripped of his team captaincy for the rest of the season and won't start in Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, team-imposed punishment following his drunken-driving arrest by Denver police.

In a statement released Saturday, the Broncos also said Williams was being fined the maximum amount possible for conduct detrimental to the team. The amount was not disclosed.

Update: The Broncos fined Williams nearly $15,000.

"The Denver Broncos are extremely disappointed in D.J. Williams' careless and irresponsible actions," the club statement said in part. "This type of behavior is taken very seriously by the organization."

Williams was arrested early Friday for investigation of drunken driving and also was cited for driving at night time without his headlights on, authorities said.

He did not take part in the team's practice Friday. It's believed Williams will sit out at least the first quarter following a pattern set in a similar case earlier this season by the New York Jets, who sat down wide receiver Braylon Edwards following his DUI case.

Wesley Woodyard, Joe Mays or Mario Haggan are among the candidates to start in place of Williams.

Denver's leading tackler with 72 stops, Williams was pulled over by Denver police near the intersection of 9th and Broadway downtown at about 2:40 a.m. He was taken to a detox facility where he was finger-printed, booked, and had a mug shot taken before being given a court summons and released several hours later. He faces an initial hearing on Dec. 13 in Denver County Court.

The Broncos said any further discipline on Williams would come from the legal system or the NFL, which can impose fines and-or a suspension under the league's personal conduct policy.
