A game between a 4-4 team and a 2-6 team wouldn't ordinarily have much in the way of playoff implications. But in the pathetic NFC West, both the Rams and 49ers entered Sunday's game in San Francisco believing they had a legitimate shot of winning their division.
The 49ers kept themselves in contention with a 23-20 victory in overtime. The 49ers improved to 3-6; the Rams fell to 4-5.
Rams rookie quarterback Sam Bradford played a calm, efficient game and avoided mistakes, while 49ers quarterback Troy Smith was given a game plan in which he was expected to take chances and make plays downfield. Both quarterbacks followed their game plans effectively in a very exciting game.
o. One of Smith's strengths in running San Francisco's offense is his ability to throw the ball on the run. He showed that off on a roll out early in the first quarter that he turned into a 32-yard pass to Vernon Davis, and then he did it again in the second quarter rolling out in the end zone, avoiding what could have been a disaster, and turning a broken play into a 38-yard pass to Davis.
