Giants' Defense Carved Up by Cowboys

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants came into New Meadowlands Stadium today, riding a five-game winning streak that had put them atop, not just the NFC East, but the entire conference. The GIants boasted the league's top-ranked defense and the NFC's best pass rush.

What's more, the visitor was the once-mighty Dallas Cowboys, who had lost five in a row to crash to the bottom of the NFC and get coach Wade Phillips fired. And while Dallas had only lost 41-35 at home to New York three weeks earlier, the Cowboys had led 20-7 thanks to a punt return touchdown by Dez Bryant and three early Giants turnovers that produced their 13 other early points. By the time, Dallas scored again in the fourth quarter, New York led 38-20 and blitzing linebacker Michael Boley had broken Cowboys Pro Bowl quarterback Tony Romo's left collarbone.

But this evening, the Giants, who had 21 sacks in four games in October, only got to Romo's replacement once and that's when Jon Kitna was tripped by left guard Kyle Kosier as he dropped back to pass and was touched by Osi Umenyiora.

"The quarterback seemed to have time to throw and they made some big plays down the field on us," said Giants coach Tom Coughlin.
