ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Falcons fought for their NFC South lives on Sunday, holding off the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 27-21, to improve to 6-2 on the season and grab a one-game lead over the Buccaneers and a half-game edge on the New Orleans Saints in the division. But Sunday's showdown didn't have to be that close.
The final outcome boiled down to a Falcons' goal-line stand in the waning minutes of the game. The Buccaneers chewed up seven minutes of the final quarter, moving from their own 9-yard line to the Atlanta 11. Tampa Bay manged to get down to the 2 with an incomplete pass and a pair of LeGarrette Blount runs
But on fourth down from the Falcons 2, Tampa Bay couldn't punch it into the end zone. Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud pounced on Blount and forced the Buccaneers' offense from the field.
