Clinton Portis injuryLANDOVER, Md. -- Redskins coach Mike Shanahan said Wednesday that Clinton Portis, who has been sidelined since tearing a groin in Week 4 at Philadelphia, won't practice this week or next. That means it's unlikely that Portis -- Washington's No. 1 running back, when healthy, for the last seven seasons -- will be in the lineup when the Redskins return from their bye on Nov. 15 against those same Eagles.

That was the outside date for his return when Shanahan announced on Oct. 6 that Portis would be out 4-6 weeks.

"A third-degree separation, you don't want to push it too hard," Shanahan said Wednesday. "To me, it will be a minimum of two weeks before he's able to push it. That's when he'd be able to test it a little bit. You still got to get in football shape. I don't put anything past Clinton. He's working extremely hard right now.

"He might be ready for the Philly week, I really don't know. My past experience with that third-degree tear, it takes a while. It doesn't happen overnight."
