Giants Find Turnovers Remain Their Achilles' Heel on Offense

Make no mistake. The NFC East-leading New York Giants' stunning 33-20 loss Sunday evening to the lowly Dallas Cowboys can largely be blamed on a poor performance by the league's top defense, one that allowed 427 yards and 26 points (the other seven came off an interception return) after ranking in the top three in the NFL in nine of 12 categories through eight games.

However, New York's second-ranked offense, which ranked in the top seven in nine of 12 categories, has to shoulder its share of responsibility, too. That's especially the case for the Giants' season-long Achilles' heel on offense: turnovers. Sunday, Eli Manning threw two more interceptions, raising his season total to 13, the most for any quarterback under 40 years old (little shot at Brett Favre). And Rich Seubert, filling in for injured center Shaun O'Hara, wildly flung a snap for New York's 12th lost fumble this year. The Giants' 25 giveaways make them the most generous offense other than those of 3-6 Arizona and 1-8 Carolina, who have 26 turnovers each.

"You can't afford to play mistake football," Manning said. "We have kind of gotten away with it some other games because we're explosive. This game the mistakes backfired."
