Patriots Stand Alone After Another Parity-Filled NFL Sunday

This is the time in most seasons when folks start looking for phone numbers and e-mail addresses of players from the 1972 Dolphins to ask them how they feel about the possibility that the Colts or the Patriots or (fill in the blank) will finish the season unbeaten.

This year?

Not only did the last unbeaten team go down three weeks ago, but there now is just one one-loss team: New England, the most consistent winner of this century. We got to that point Sunday when the still-crippled Packers knocked off the one-loss Jets on the road and the Saints handed the Steelers their second loss. Those also were wins by underachieving NFC teams over top AFC teams, slowing down the rush to judgment that the AFC is far the superior conference.

In addition:

o. Brett Favre was knocked down and out again, probably to rise next week.

o. Donovan McNabb was benched because the firm of Shanahan and Son in Washington seemed to think that Rex Grossman -- Rex Grossman? -- is better at the two-minute drill.

o. Oakland looked for the second straight week like the team whose motto used to be "Commitment to Excellence.''
