The 49ers scored 21 points in an eight and a half minute stretch of the fourth quarter, and pulled away to beat the Denver Broncos 24-16 Sunday in the NFL's fourth overseas regular-season game.
Played at London's Wembley Stadium, the 49ers got a strong game from quarterback Troy Smith, who was starting in place of injured Alex Smith. Troy Smith ran for a score and threw for another in leading the 49ers to just their second win of the season.
Denver fought back to make it close, with Kyle Orton hitting Brandon Lloyd with a 1-yard scoring pass with 2:19 left. The Broncos Matt Prater missed the extra point and Denver remained in a tailspin, losing its fourth straight and dropping to 4-14 since that 6-0 start last season.
Some thoughts on the game:
o. Linebacker Manny Lawson forced an Orton fumble at the end of a scramble that was recovered for the 49ers by Takeo Spikes at Denver's 18-yard line. The turnover led to a clinching touchdown by Frank Gore on a 3-yard run with 3:47 remaining. Gore had more than 100 yards rushing on the day.
